Atlas ENT
Clear information, written by a specialist
Atlas gathers what I usually explain in clinic: what each condition is, how it is diagnosed, what each test is for, what operations involve and how to look after yourself before and after. Every page is written in plain language and shows the date it was last reviewed.
All areas
- Hearing and balance Ear The ear picks up sound and, in its innermost part, keeps you balanced. Many cases of dizziness and vertigo start here.
- Breathing and smell Nose and sinuses The nose filters, warms and moistens the air you breathe. The sinuses are air spaces connected to it that can become inflamed.
- Oral cavity Mouth Lips, tongue, gums and palate. A mouth sore that has not healed after two or three weeks should always be checked.
- Pharynx and tonsils Throat The pharynx is the passage that connects the nose and mouth to the gullet and voice box. The tonsils and adenoids sit here.
- Voice and airway Larynx It holds the vocal cords. It makes your voice and protects your airway when you swallow. Hoarseness lasting more than three weeks should be assessed.
- Lymph nodes, cysts and thyroid Neck Lymph nodes, blood vessels and nerves run through the neck, and the thyroid sits here. A lump that lasts more than two or three weeks should be investigated.
- Parotid and submandibular Salivary glands They make saliva. The parotid sits in front of the ear and the submandibular gland under the jaw. They can swell or form stones.
